INTERNET BROWSERS

In order to navigate through the ever growing World Wide Web the concept of the Internet Browser was developed. A browser is merely a piece of software that runs on your computer to allow efficient and organized 'browsing' of the Internet. This software is ever-changing, with updated and improved versions constantly becoming available.
With a properly set up browser on your computer navigating or 'surfing' the Internet is as simple as a mouse click. The browser does all the work of interpreting the mouse click and bringing one of the millions of Internet pages directly onto to your computer screen.
The two most popular browsers in the computer marketplace today are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Before proceeding to download either browser the specific licensing agreement should be read carefully. Click here to see the user license agreements for both Netscape Navigator Gold and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
The current Netscape Navigator Gold 3.01 includes a built in Web Page Editor. Although all editors will allow you to change the HTML text, Netscape Navigator Gold allows both WYSIWYG and standard word processing editing of Web Pages. WYSIWYG is an anachronism for 'What You See Is What You Get' . This enhanced editor design approach simplifies the user's operation of editing by allowing instantaneous visual feedback on exactly what effects any user input will have on the overall finished product. When applied to web page creation (i.e. HTML programming, the web page programming language) you get an opportunity to see all your web page work exactly as it would appear to the viewing browser without having to operate with the actual HTML text code and tags. The end result is simply web page creation with minimal HTML knowledge.

This one software package will provide most of what you need, with both browser and web page creation capability including an uploading (ftp) file feature. Installation onto your computer is completely automatic when you double click on the downloaded file. Beware of the simple precaution of making sure you obtain the correct version that will run on your operating system (Windows95, 3.11, OS2, etc.). Also we suggest you specify the following when selecting your version: Netscape Navigator Gold 3.01-- Standard

NEW! Netscape has released the latest version of Netscape that is considerably enhanced, including an upgraded WYSIWYG editor.

Click on the following Netscape rotating cube to download Netscape Navigator Gold 3.01 or the new and much improved Netscape Navigator version 4.01a, 4.02, or the very latest 4.03

Note: As of 9/14/97 this author has found Netscape Navigator 4.02 and 4.03 to cause frequent crashes on several Pentium systems requiring rebooting, but that version 4.01a appeared extremely stable and reliable.

4.03 has caused frequent Windows95 lockups on the author's system when accessing web pages with certain kinds of java applets. No technical analysis related to the described problems has been done, so take these comments accordingly.

Note as of 10/5/97: This author has determined that this problem is caused by not fully removing previous versions before installing a new version. Make sure you uninstall properly the earlier Netscape version. Also research has shown that Netscape 4.02 may not be as display tolerant to incorrect page HTML code as the 4.01 version.

Note as of 10/29/97: If you decide to use the latest versions (4.02 or 4.03) use the following to FIX any java freezing problems you might encounter. This has worked well on the author's system which is now running version 4.03 glitch free.

Note as of 11/18/97: Yet a new version is out --- version 4.04 . It supposedly fixes some of the earlier version problems and has a few more bells and whistles.

Note as of 11/25/97: Version 4.04 seems to be a real WINNER! It is faster and appears bug free so far in my use of it. The only drawback is its huge download size of 10+ megs. However, if you are going to download any 4 version, this is probably the one.

Note as of 4/12/98: Version 4.05 is now out with various fixes, the most important probably being faster and better applet handling.

Note as of 8/19/98 Version 4.06 is available and has more features and faster performance. This appears to be a preview of what the next big level version 4.5 will be like.

Note as of 10/27/98 Version 4.5 is available.  Still better performance and features.  Netscape Conference appears to have been removed.

Note as of 3/10/99 Version 4.51 is available.  Minor bug fixes and Java upgrading and much faster page loading.  If already using a 4 version Netscape, use the SmartUpdate feature to avoid downloading the complete Communicator  version package.

Note as of 5/21/99 Version 4.6 is available.  Very fast -- the claim is made that Netscape 4.6 loads pages 15% faster than IE5.  Lots of improvements made to the various bells and whistles (search, AOL Instant Messenger, Real Player upgrade, etc).   Download the SmartUpdate!

Note as of 6/15/99 Version upgrade to 4.61.  Upgraded for fixes and speed.   Download the SmartUpdate of only 2.6 megs.

Note as of 10/15/00 Version upgrade to 4.76.  Upgraded for small fixes.   Download the SmartUpdate .

Note as of 11/30/00 Version 6.  Although interesting, this version is not yet up to speed, in that it does not handle some applets correctly and has no print preview ability.  Future updates may correct these problems.

The present Microsoft Internet Explorer does not offer its own built in editor. It is linkable in your software setup to the Front-page editor if installed on your system. The Front-page editor is a Microsoft purchased item and is NOT included in the following download link. Future Microsoft Internet Explorer versions may contain an integral HTML editor and, if so, NFN Web Services will try to post relevant tutorial information.

The latest release of Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 4 and 5 version) is now out and available for download. It is very large and integrates tightly into Windows -- a subject of much debate with the arrival of Windows98.  Be aware that default installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer will globally affect your Windows 95/98, not necessarily desirable from the standpoint of system changes or other program operations.
