Water Resources Sub-Committee
| GOAL Develop a comprehensive Action Plan that addresses our future water needs, including the freshwater environment, estuarine systems, potable supplies, irrigation, recreation and aesthetics, while providing adequate drainage and flood control OVERVIEW:The Water Resources Sub-Committee first evaluated the current situation in Collier County - finding that the important foundation for meeting water demands for 20 years into the future has been laid - then identified areas which could support or assist in these critical plans. ACHIEVEMENTS:- Water Master Plan and 2001 Facilities Plan Update completed by County and City - assures meeting of 20-year demand - Aquifer Storage Recovery pilot program undertaken by Florida Water Services - will allow wet season water storage for use during dry season - Stormwater/flooding Corrective Program for Lely and Gordon River Basins funded - Water Conservation Plan implemented by Everglades City RECOMMENDATIONS TO GOVERNMENT:- Implement County-wide water conservation program, including public education - Evaluate potential for contamination as development continues around aquifer sources; assess needs for land purchases - Expand reclaimed water systems, also pursuing interconnection of City and County systems (pursue grant funding for construction costs) - Develop program for wet season surface water discharge, including estimated 550 million gallons per day from Golden Gate Canal - Create a City/County Advisory Board for cooperative planning - Restore natural sheetflow on publicly-owned lands to enhance acquire recharge and reduce freshwater discharge to estuaries |
